About

I'm Shanjai R.

A data scientist working at the intersection of data, engineering and analytics, with a production engineering foundation underneath it.

Who I Am

I'm a data scientist interested in the space between engineering, data, analytics and business problems. My career started with hands-on software engineering around data collection and processing systems.

As I worked on more complex problems, I became increasingly interested in the parts that happen before and after the code: understanding the requirement, identifying what information actually matters, finding dependencies, and making sure the final system is useful to the people using it. That's what pulled me toward data science.

My Engineering Journey

I started my career as an intern and gradually moved into broader engineering and, later, data-focused responsibilities.

2023 – Present

PromptCloud / 42Signals

Intern → Associate Software Engineer → Software Engineer I → Software Engineer II

Joined PromptCloud in July 2023, and moved onto 42Signals (PromptCloud's e-commerce intelligence product) partway through the internship. Have owned progressively larger parts of it since: data collection and processing at first, then analytics systems, then full product operations.

How My Interests Changed

Early in my career, my focus was primarily on making systems work. As I worked on more problems, I became increasingly interested in why systems were built the way they were, what information actually mattered, and how engineering decisions affected other teams and the final business outcome. That pushed my interest toward data engineering, analytics and eventually data science.

My Current Direction
Software Engineering
Data Engineering
Analytics
Data Science
Business Intelligence

The common thread is simple: using technology and data to understand problems and make better decisions.

Cross-Functional Thinking

I enjoy understanding how different teams see the same problem. Product may see a customer requirement. QA may see a recurring failure. Sales may see a client problem. Analytics may see a data gap. Engineering may see a technical limitation.

Often, these are not separate problems. They are different views of the same system. Understanding those connections has become an important part of how I approach engineering.

Where I'm Going

I want to grow into roles with broader ownership. I want to continue developing technically, but I am increasingly interested in prioritization, decision-making, mentoring, cross-functional coordination and team leadership.

Long term, I want to be someone who can understand a problem from multiple angles, help a team make the right decision, and turn that decision into a system that actually works.
